Thank you for visiting First Baptist Church. We would like to give you some information
about our church and it’s ministries. For our Summer Worship, we hold our service on Sunday
mornings at 9:00am and Sunday School begins at 10:15am. We have Infant Nursery Service
available for these times as well as Children’s Church for Ages 3,4 & 5 and Elementary Children’s
Church for Ages 6 through 5th Grade. We have Sunday School for all ages as well. If you have any
questions or to schedule a meeting with one of our Pastors call 815-234-8737.
What an exciting time it is to share in what God is doing in our Church @ First Baptist, in
our Byron community and surrounding area, and in our Church Conference, Converge Worldwide and
Converge Midwest. Reports in the media focus on the instability of our economy. It could be
tempting to allow Satan to infect us with fear in these times. Will we allow the economic
downturn to diminish our ministry dreams or dampen our faith? Absolutely not! Hebrews 13:5-6
tells us: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because
God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ So we say with confidence, ‘The
Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”. The Lord IS my helper; I will
NOT be afraid. What can man do to me? It is our blessing to be able to speak these words with
emphasis and with confidence! God is our helper and He will never leave us or forsake us. What
a blessing! In threatening economic times, remember, we hold the trump card: God’s promises
backed by God’s faithfulness.
We at First Baptist have a bold vision, a bold faith, bold prayers and bold ministry. We will
not be afraid. May our God be glorified as we boldly serve Him. We invite you to join with us!
On July 23rd our church grew by one person. Our Youth Pastor and his wife welcomed into this
world Norah Scruggs. I know, I know she’s not a member yet but she’s been attending for 9 months.
We’ll give her a few more weeks to “see” what a great church we have.
Church growth can be measured in many different ways. Numbers are what most people look at. But there
are also other ways. Ministries, maturity, missions, and outreach are other important factors to look at.
Robert Logan did an international research project studying church growth. He came up with the following
8 characteristics essential for churches:
1. Empowering Leadership
2. Gift-Oriented Ministry
3. Passionate Spirituality
4. Functional Structure
5. Inspiring Worship
6. Holistic Small Groups
7. Evangelism
8. Loving Relationships.
I intend to study these areas with our leadership and will be sharing with you all how we can improve,
not to necessarily grow in attendance, but to fulfill the Great Commission. We currently have 3
churches without buildings trying to start in Byron. I just heard of a mega church from Colorado that
is targeting Byron for a church plant. Why? Because they want to reach the 90% + people in the Byron area
that will not attend church this Sunday.
Someone once said, “If you want to build a ship, don’t just drum up men to gather wood. Instead teach
them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.” What is your vision?
Keep The Faith,
Pastor Randy
